Mouse Physiology Laboratory

Isolated Cell Studies

Isolated cardiac myocytes can be obtained from Langendorff perfused mouse or rat hearts. These cells are calcium tolerant and will contract in response to external electrical stimuli. The mouse physiology laboratory has an IonOptix Myotrack system to characterize the unloaded shortening and relaxation characteristics from myocytes over a range of conditions and stimulus rates. This shortening-frequency information provides an alternative index of function when compared to the other whole animal studies of the lab. Isolated cells can also be prepared for other biochemical, molecular and immunohistological studies as an alternative to whole animal preparations.
